"Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize?  Run in such a way as to get the prize.  Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training.  They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever".

1 Corinthians 9:24-25

St. Paul Lutheran School sees the value of a sports program--helping children to grow physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually.

A wide variety of sports are offered to students in grades five through eight with an emphasis on participation and teamwork.  Competition involves both public and parochial schools.  Practice schedules take into consideration family, church, and school demands.  St. Paul employs an Athletic Director and an Athletic Secretary to oversee all athletic programs.

In the fall, seventh and eighth grade boys can choose to play football or run cross-country.  St. Paul has one of the few Lutheran tackle football programs in the country.  Girls can play volleyball or run cross-country and be members of a football cheerleader squad.

In the winter, fifth through eighth grade boys and girls can play basketball, with the schedule for grades five and six only including parochial schools.  Girls can participate on cheerleader squads.  One of the goals of the seventh and eighth grade basketball teams is to be successful enough to qualify for the National Lutheran Basketball Tournament held in Valparaiso, Indiana.  This has happened several times with the boys winning the National Championship in 1993, the Consolation Championship in 2005, and the girls winning the Consolation Championship in 2000.

Students in grades five through eight can join track in the spring.  The seventh and eight grade schedule includes several meets, working toward qualifying for the Michigan Lutheran School State Track Meet, an annual event that St. Paul has participated in since it started many years ago.  The fifth and sixth graders prepare for and take part in the same Michigan meet, competing against other fifth and sixth graders.
